In 1275 King Edward (The Hammer) decreed it unlawful to speak or publish "any false news or tales whereby discord or occasion of discord or slander may grow between the king and his people." In 2019 the UK Guardian forging forward with its campaign against "fake" and "inciteful" news published an op-ed calling for social and public media to be protected from articles that "sow division, undermine social cohesion, draw attention to examples of western hypocrisy and destabilise civil society and widen social fissures."
